“Qiaxi Spruce Forest – Yili’s Quiet Corner”

While Nalati and Kalajun draw the crowds, Qiaxi (恰西) stays hushed — a spruce forest and alpine meadow tucked in Yili’s mountains. If you want the postcard grassland without the tour buses, this is it.

The Place

Qiaxi is a valley of tall < spruce rising from green pasture, with a river and a backdrop of snow peaks. Less “stage-managed” than Nalati, more wild. Wildflowers carpet it in June; the spruce turn the air pine-fresh.

Getting There

Qiaxi sits near Gongliu county, ~150km from Yining (2.5–3h). The last stretch is a rough road — a 4WD or a confident driver helps. Many pair it with Kalajun as a 2-day Yili grasslands swing.

What to Do

  • Forest walks: trails along the river and into the spruce.
  • Meadow hangs: picnic by the water; few others around.
  • Photo: the spruce-and-snow composition is superb at golden hour.
  • Yurt stay: a handful of herder yurts for an overnight.

Why Choose It

It’s the “secret” Yili — same beauty, a fraction of the people. I spent an afternoon there with one other couple and a herd of horses. That’s the version of Xinjiang worth finding.

Practical

Basic facilities; bring food/water. No major entry fee or a small one. Weather shifts fast — pack a layer.

FAQ

Better than Nalati? Different — Qiaxi is forest+meadow and quiet; Nalati is open prairie and busy. Both good.
