“Xinjiang Travel Budget: How Much Does a Trip to Xinjiang Cost?”

*Last updated: June 2026*

One of the first questions anyone asks when planning a Xinjiang trip is: “How much is this going to cost me?” The answer isn’t simple – Xinjiang is huge, prices vary by season, and your travel style makes a big difference.

I’ve helped hundreds of travelers plan their Xinjiang budgets over the past five years. This guide breaks down real costs (based on 2025-2026 prices) so you can plan with confidence.

The Short Answer

Travel StyleDaily Budget (per person)What You Get
Budget¥300-500 ($40-70)Hostels, local buses, street food, group tours
Mid-range¥600-1,200 ($80-165)3-star hotels, private car for part of the trip, mix of local and sit-down restaurants
High-end¥1,500-3,000+ ($205-410+)4-5 star hotels, private car throughout, high-end dining, small-group guided tours

For a 10-day trip: Budget travelers spend about ¥3,000-5,000 ($410-685); mid-range travelers spend ¥6,000-12,000 ($820-1,640); high-end trips start at ¥15,000 ($2,050) and go up from there.

These are rough guides. Let’s break down the actual costs.

Cost Breakdown by Category

1. Transportation

Getting to and around Xinjiang is usually your biggest expense.

Getting to Xinjiang

RouteTransportOne-way Cost (¥)
Beijing → ÜrümqiFlight (economy)1,200-2,500
Shanghai → ÜrümqiFlight (economy)1,500-3,000
Guangzhou → ÜrümqiFlight (economy)1,800-3,500
Xi’an → ÜrümqiFlight (economy)800-1,800
Any major city → ÜrümqiTrain (hard sleeper)400-800

Tip: Flights to Ürümqi are cheapest if you book 3-4 weeks in advance. Avoid booking during Chinese holidays, when prices double or triple.

Getting Around Xinjiang

Xinjiang is massive. Distances are long. Your transportation choices matter.

OptionCost (per day)ProsCons
Long-distance bus¥100-200CheapestSlow, uncomfortable for long distances
Train¥150-400Comfortable for overnight routesLimited coverage
Rental car + driver¥800-1,500Flexible, can stop anywhereMore expensive
Rental car (self-drive)¥300-600 + gasMaximum freedomRequires international driving permit; roads can be challenging
Domestic flights¥500-1,500Saves timeCan be expensive; baggage limits

My recommendation: For a first-time visit, hire a car with driver for the northern Xinjiang circuit (Kanas, Sayram Lake). It costs ¥800-1,200/day but saves you massive amounts of time and hassle.

2. Accommodation

Hotel prices in Xinjiang vary dramatically by season and location.

Ürümqi (Capital City)

TypePrice (¥/night)
Budget hotel / hostel150-300
Mid-range (3-star)300-600
High-end (4-5 star)600-1,500

Scenic Areas (Kanas, Hemu, Sayram Lake)

TypePeak Season (Jun-Aug)Off Season
Basic guesthouse200-400100-200
Mid-range hotel500-900300-500
Boutique lodge1,000-2,000600-1,000

Important: Accommodation inside scenic areas (Kanas Village, Hemu Village) is limited and expensive. If you’re on a budget, stay in nearby towns (Jiadengyu for Kanas; Yining for Sayram Lake).

3. Food and Drinks

Xinjiang food is a highlight of the trip. It’s also very affordable.

Meal TypeCost (¥)
Street food / quick bite (noodles, kebabs)15-40
Mid-range restaurant meal60-120
High-end Uyghur / Kazakh dining150-300
Beer / soft drink5-15
Bottled water (1.5L)3-5

Daily food budget:

  • Budget: ¥80-120/day (street food + convenience store meals)
  • Mid-range: ¥150-250/day (mix of local restaurants)
  • High-end: ¥300-500/day (sit-down dining, alcohol)

Tip: Xinjiang portions are generous. One main dish is often enough for two people at lunch.

4. Entrance Fees and Activities

Xinjiang’s scenic areas have entrance fees – and they’re not cheap.

Scenic AreaEntrance + Shuttle (¥)
Kanas Lake260
Sayram Lake145
Nalati Grassland175
Kalajun Grassland170
Tianchi (Heavenly Lake)155
Turpan (multiple sites)100-200 (combined ticket available)

For a 10-day trip visiting 5-7 scenic areas, budget ¥1,000-1,500 per person just for entrance fees.

Money-saving tip: Some areas offer multi-day passes or combined tickets. Ask at the ticket office.

5. Guides and Tours

TypeCost
Local guide (per day)¥300-800
Small group tour (per day, per person)¥400-800
Private English-speaking guide (per day)¥600-1,200

Do you need a guide? Not necessarily. Major scenic areas have signage in English (limited but improving). If you don’t speak Chinese, a guide is highly recommended for cultural sites (Kashgar Old City, Turpan).

6. Shopping and Souvenirs

Xinjiang has great souvenirs – but prices vary widely.

ItemTypical Price (¥)
Dried fruit (raisins, apricots) – 1kg40-80
Local nuts (walnuts, almonds) – 1kg60-120
Uyghur handicrafts (small items)30-200
Carpets (small)500-2,000
Jade (be careful – many fakes)200-10,000+

Tip: Bargaining is expected in local markets (bazaars). Start at 50-60% of the asking price.

Money-Saving Tips That Actually Work

  1. Travel in shoulder season (May or October). Hotel prices drop 30-50% compared to July-August.
  2. Share a car. Private car with driver costs ¥800-1,200/day – expensive for one person, reasonable for 3-4 people splitting the cost.
  3. Eat where locals eat. Restaurants near scenic areas charge a premium. Walk 10 minutes away and prices drop by half.
  4. Book accommodation directly. Many hotels in Xinjiang offer discounts for direct bookings (WeChat/phone) vs. booking platforms.
  5. Bring a reusable water bottle. Buying bottled water multiple times a day adds up. Most hotels and restaurants will refill it for free.
  6. Skip the expensive “cultural shows.” Most are overpriced tourist traps. The real culture is in the old city streets, the markets, and the conversations with locals.

What About Tipping?

Tipping isn’t customary in China, including Xinjiang. You don’t need to tip in restaurants, for guides, or for drivers. That said, if someone went above and beyond, a small tip (¥20-50) is appreciated but not expected.

Payment Methods

MethodAcceptance
Alipay / WeChat PayNearly universal in cities and towns
Credit cardMajor hotels and restaurants in Ürümqi; rarely accepted in small towns
CashEssential in remote areas; bring ¥500-1,000 in small bills

For foreign travelers: Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before arriving. International credit cards now work on both platforms (as of 2024-2025 updates), which makes payment much easier than it used to be.

The Bottom Line

Xinjiang isn’t a budget destination in the way that, say, Southeast Asia is – but it’s not as expensive as Japan or Western Europe either. A mid-range trip costs about the same as a mid-range trip in most of Europe.

The single biggest cost factor is transportation. If you’re willing to take buses and trains, you can do Xinjiang on a budget. If you want flexibility and comfort, a private car is worth every yuan.

My personal take: don’t skimp on transportation. The long distances are what make Xinjiang challenging – and having a reliable car and driver transforms the experience from “exhausting” to “unforgettable.”
