The Drive That Changes Everything
I didn’t expect to cry at a lake. But there I was, driving the ring road around Sayram, no music, windows down, and I had to pull over.
The color of the water — a blue so intense it looks filtered — against the snow-capped mountains and the wildflower-covered slopes… it gets you.
Why “Atlantic’s Last Tear”?
Sayram is the last place the Atlantic’s moisture reaches before hitting the Central Asian desert. It’s a high-altitude alpine lake (2,073m) that stays cold year-round.
No rivers flow into it. No rivers flow out. Just snowmelt and rain.
When to Go
June-July: Wildflowers cover the slopes around the lake. The water is its bluest. This is peak season for a reason.
August: Still good, but starting to get hot (for the area). The grasslands are lush.
September: Fewer crowds, crisp air, the beginning of autumn colors on the surrounding mountains.
Winter: The lake freezes and you can (theoretically) walk on it. Most facilities closed. Only for the adventurous.
The Ring Road (环湖公路)
This is the main event. An 87 km paved road that circles the entire lake. You can drive it in 2-3 hours (with stops), or take a full day and do it properly.
Highlights:
- East shore: Better views of the water, more wildflower areas
- West shore: Closer to the mountains, fewer tour buses
- North shore: The best picnic spots (if you brought food)
Cost: The scenic area entrance fee is ¥70 (includes the ring road). You can drive your own car in (¥200/car including entrance) or take the shuttle bus.
Where to Stay
Yiling Holiday Hotel (颐蘭假日酒店): Right by the lake. ¥400-800/night. Waking up and walking to the water in 5 minutes.
Ger camps (蒙古包): May-September only. Staying in a Mongolian ger next to the lake is the experience. ¥150-300/person including dinner and breakfast.
Just outside the scenic area: 10-20 km away, much cheaper (¥120-250), but you miss the sunrise/sunset at the lake.
Getting There
From Urumqi: 5-6 hour drive via the G30 highway. Good road, scenic route.
From Yining (Ili): 1.5 hours. If you’re doing the Ili Valley, Sayram is an easy day trip or overnight.
By bus: There are tour buses from Yining. Less flexible but cheaper.
The Verdict
Sayram is less “famous” internationally than Kanas, but among people who’ve actually been to Xinjiang, it’s often the favorite.
Less commercialized, easier to find quiet spots, and that drive… if you do one scenic drive in China, make it this one.
