The Hype is Real (But Manage Expectations)
If you’ve seen those photos of emerald water surrounded by golden birch forests, that’s Kanas. And yes, it really looks like that.
But here’s the thing nobody tells you: Kanas is also one of the most commercialized spots in Xinjiang. Expect tour groups, elevated prices, and boardwalks.
That said — if you time it right and get away from the main drags — it’s spectacular.
When to Go (This Matters More Here)
Mid-September to early October: This is THE window. The birch forests turn gold, the weather is crisp, and the summer crowds have left.
July-August: Green everywhere, wildflowers at higher elevations, but crowds and higher prices.
Winter: The lake freezes over and turns a jade-green color. It’s magical, but most facilities are closed and it’s brutally cold.
Avoid: Chinese holidays (the lake looks the same, but you’ll be sharing it with 10,000 of your closest friends).
Getting There (The Logistics)
From Urumqi: 10-12 hour drive (or bus). The road is paved and scenic, but it’s LONG.
Fly: There’s an airport at Kanas (KJI) in summer/fall. 1.5 hours from Urumqi. Costs ¥800-2000 depending on season.
My recommendation: Drive or hire a car. The journey along the Devil’s City and the Colorful Beach is worth it.
What to Actually Do
1. The Lake Itself
The main boardwalk is 3 km. It’s paved, it’s easy, and it’s crowded. Do it anyway for the views.
Pro tip: Go at 7 AM before the tour groups arrive. The mist on the lake at sunrise is legit.
2. Hike to Hemu Village (禾木村)
This is the real reason to come to Kanas. Hemu is a Tuva village with wooden cabins, smoke coming from chimneys, and horses grazing in meadows.
The hike from Kanas Lake to Hemu is 15 km (one way). You can also take a shuttle bus (¥60).
Stay overnight in Hemu: ¥150-400 for a guesthouse. Waking up there in autumn is… I don’t have the words.
3. Viewing Platform at Moon Bay (月亮湾)
It’s the most photographed spot in Kanas. The boardwalk down to the water is steep but worth it.
Crowd hack: The light is best at sunset, but that’s when everyone’s there. Try 8-9 AM instead.
Where to Stay
Inside the Scenic Area: There are guesthouses at the lake and in Hemu. They’re more expensive (¥200-600/night) but you’re inside when the day-trippers leave.
Outside (Beitun/布尔津): Cheaper (¥120-250), but you’ll have to enter the scenic area each day (¥185 entrance fee + ¥100 shuttle).
The Verdict
Kanas is worth the hype, but it’s also the most “developed” natural area in Xinjiang. If you want raw, untouched nature — go deeper into the Tian Shan or Altay regions.
But for a first trip to Xinjiang? Kanas is the poster child for a reason. Just manage your expectations, book ahead in autumn, and get up early.
