The “Heavenly” Part is Accurate
Tianchi (天池) means “Heavenly Lake” in Chinese. It sits at 1,907 meters in the Tian Shan mountains, an hour from Urumqi. The water is glacial blue, the surrounding peaks have snow year-round, and there’s a Mongolian legend that a god dropped a mirror here.
It’s also the most touristy natural spot near Urumqi. But with the right approach, it’s still worth it.

When to Go
June-September: The lake is accessible, the weather is pleasant (15-25°C), wildflowers in the higher meadows.
October-November: Fewer crowds, autumn colors on the surrounding slopes, crisp air.
Winter: The lake freezes. You can sometimes walk on it (with guides). Very few tourists. Brutally cold.
Avoid: Chinese holidays (National Day in October, Labor Day in May). The boardwalks become conveyor belts of people.

What to Do (Beyond the Obvious)
1. The Main Lake View (标准路线)
The standard 2-hour walk around the lake on the boardwalk. It’s paved, it’s easy, and the views are legit.
Crowd hack: Most tour groups do the lake in the morning. If you arrive by 8 AM, you’ll have 2 hours of relative peace.
2. Hike Up to the West Peak (西王母祖庙区域)
There’s a trail that goes up from the main lake area to a higher vantage point. It’s steeper, less paved, and 90% of tourists don’t do it.
The view from up there — the lake below, the Tian Shan peaks behind — is the photo you actually want.
Time: 2-3 hours round trip. Difficulty: Moderate.
3. The “Back Lake” (后山 / 马牙山)
Most tourists don’t know this exists. If you hike about 2 hours beyond the main lake (or take a shuttle + hike), there’s a smaller, quieter lake with almost no one around.
Note: This requires more time and fitness. Not for a rushed day trip.
Getting There
From Urumqi: 1.5-hour drive. You can hire a driver (¥300-500 round trip) or take a tour bus from the Urumqi long-distance bus station.
Entrance fee: ¥125 (includes shuttle bus from the entrance to the lake). The shuttle is mandatory — private cars park at the bottom.
Where to Eat
There’s a food area near the lake. It’s overpriced (¥60-100 for a mediocre meal).
My recommendation: Eat a big breakfast in Urumqi, bring snacks and water, and have a late lunch back in the city.
The Verdict
Heavenly Lake is the “entry-level” Xinjiang nature experience. If you only have 3 days in the region, it’s a good intro.
But if you have time to get deeper — Kanas, Sayram, the grasslands — Heavenly Lake starts to feel a bit… managed.
Still, for a day trip from Urumqi? It delivers. Just go early and walk further than the crowd does.
