“How Many Days for Xinjiang – Realistic Itineraries”

  • Many hotels and restaurants close, especially in tourist areas like Kanas
  • But… you’ll have places like Kashgar almost to yourself
  • My advice: Focus on Kashgar and Urumqi. Skip Kanas (it’s closed or miserably cold).
  • Practical Tips for Planning

    1. Don’t underestimate travel times.

Distances in Xinjiang are insane. Urumqi to Kashgar is 1,500 km – that’s like New York to Florida. Even “short” drives of 200-300 km can take 5-6 hours because the roads aren’t great and you’ll hit checkpoints.

    2. Build in buffer days.

Things go wrong in Xinjiang. Your internal flight gets cancelled (happened to me twice). A road is closed due to weather. You meet some travelers in a hostel and decide to join them to 伊犁. Build in 1-2 buffer days at the end of your trip.

    3. Consider the altitude.

If you’re going to Taxkorgan (3,700m) or Kanas (1,300m, not too bad), give yourself time to acclimate. I’ve seen people try to do Kashgar → Taxkorgan in one day and spend the entire time vomiting from altitude sickness. Not ideal.

    4. Domestic flights are your friend.

Urumqi ↔ Kanas: 1.5 hours (vs. 10+ hour drive)

Urumqi ↔ Kashgar: 2 hours (vs. 18+ hour drive or 24+ hour train)

Kashgar ↔ 和田: 45 minutes (vs. 5-6 hour drive)

Yes, flights cost more than buses. But your time in Xinjiang is limited – is saving $50 worth spending 10 hours on a cramped bus?

    The Verdict

    Here’s my honest recommendation:

    • 5-7 days: Pick ONE region (north OR south). Don’t try to do both.
    • 10-12 days: North + south is possible if you use flights strategically.
    • 15-21 days: Now you can relax and actually experience the place.
    • But whatever you do, please don’t try to “see it all” in two weeks. You’ll spend your entire vacation in transit, and you’ll leave Xinjiang exhausted and disappointed.

Slow down. Pick a few places. Go deep instead of broad.

And if someone tells you that you “must” see Kanas, Heavenly Lake, Turpan, Kashgar, and the Taklamakan Desert all in one trip? Smile politely and ignore them. They’re trying to sell you something, or they’ve never actually done it themselves.

      • Some roads might still be closed (especially to Taxkorgan)
      • Apricot blossoms in Kashgar area are incredible
      • My advice: Stick to south Xinjiang or lower-elevation areas in the north.

                                          • Taxkorgan + Karakoram Highway (2-3 days) – high altitude, stunning, physically demanding
                                          • 和田 (Hotan) (2 days) – jade market, silk production, very traditional
                                          • Return to Urumqi or fly out from Kashgar
                                          • The Mistake Everyone Makes: Trying to See Everything

I get it. You’ve flown 6,000 miles to get here. You want to see it all. But Xinjiang isn’t a checklist – it’s an experience.

The best moments I’ve had in Xinjiang weren’t at “attractions.” They were:

                                            • Sitting in a yurt drinking milk tea with a Kazakh family for three hours
                                            • Getting lost in Kashgar’s old city and stumbling into a dead-end alley where kids were playing soccer

                                              • Kanas Lake is gorgeous but swarming with tour groups
                                              • Kashgar is hot (35-40°C) but the night market is epic
                                              • My advice: Slow down even more. The heat will drain you.
                                              • September-October (My Favorite):

                                                • Weather is perfect, crowds thin out
                                                • Kanas in early October = fall colors that’ll ruin all other scenery for you
                                                • Kashgar is more comfortable temperature-wise
                                                • My advice: This is prime time. You can be more ambitious with your itinerary.
                                                • April-May (Spring):

                                                  • Some roads might still be closed (especially to Taxkorgan)
                                                  • Apricot blossoms in Kashgar area are incredible
                                                  • My advice: Stick to south Xinjiang or lower-elevation areas in the north.
                                                  • November-March (Winter):

                                                        • Turpan (2 days) – ancient ruins, grape valleys, insane heat
                                                        • Kuqa (2-3 days) – 运用大峡谷, Buddhist caves, way fewer tourists than Kashgar
                                                        • Kashgar (3-4 days) – the crown jewel, take your time here
                                                        • Week 3: The Wild West

                                                            • Eating at a hole-in-the-wall nan bread shop in Kashgar at 7 AM when the baker was just firing up the tandoor
                                                            • You can’t schedule these moments. They happen when you’re not rushing.

Time of Year Matters (A Lot)

Your itinerary should also depend on when you’re visiting:

                                                              June-August (Peak Season):

                                                              • Everything is accessible, but it’s crowded and expensive
                                                              • Kanas Lake is gorgeous but swarming with tour groups
                                                              • Kashgar is hot (35-40°C) but the night market is epic

                                                                          • Week 3: The Wild West

                                                                                • My advice: Slow down even more. The heat will drain you.
                                                                                • September-October (My Favorite):

                                                                                  • Weather is perfect, crowds thin out
                                                                                  • Kanas in early October = fall colors that’ll ruin all other scenery for you
                                                                                  • Kashgar is more comfortable temperature-wise
                                                                                  • My advice: This is prime time. You can be more ambitious with your itinerary.
                                                                                  • April-May (Spring):

                                                                                    • Some roads might still be closed (especially to Taxkorgan)
                                                                                    • Apricot blossoms in Kashgar area are incredible
                                                                                    • My advice: Stick to south Xinjiang or lower-elevation areas in the north.
                                                                                    • November-March (Winter):

Published on Xinjiang Travels – Real travel advice from someone who learned the hard way.

                                                                                          • Days 7-9: Kashgar (Old City, Sunday Market, food)
                                                                                          • Day 10: Karakoram Highway to Taxkorgan
                                                                                          • Days 11-12: Kuqa or return to Urumqi
                                                                                          • Why this works: You’re using flights to cover the massive distances, not spending your entire vacation in a car. Xinjiang has a decent internal flight network – use it.

Option 3: The “I Have 2-3 Weeks” Dream Trip

Okay, now we’re talking. With 15-21 days, you can actually slow down and experience Xinjiang properly.

                                                                                            My ideal 3-week route:

                                                                                            Week 1: North Xinjiang

                                                                                            • Urumqi (2 days) – use this to acclimate and see Heavenly Lake
                                                                                            • Kanas + Hemu (4-5 days) – hike, relax, maybe get stuck in a yurt during a rainstorm (speaking from experience)
                                                                                            • 伊犁 + 那拉提草原 (3 days) – this area is criminally underrated
                                                                                            • Week 2: The Silk Road Cities

                                                                                              • Turpan (2 days) – ancient ruins, grape valleys, insane heat
                                                                                              • Kuqa (2-3 days) – 运用大峡谷, Buddhist caves, way fewer tourists than Kashgar
                                                                                              • Kashgar (3-4 days) – the crown jewel, take your time here
                                                                                              • Week 3: The Wild West

                                                                                                    • My advice: Slow down even more. The heat will drain you.
                                                                                                    • September-October (My Favorite):

                                                                                                      • Weather is perfect, crowds thin out
                                                                                                      • Kanas in early October = fall colors that’ll ruin all other scenery for you
                                                                                                      • Kashgar is more comfortable temperature-wise
                                                                                                      • My advice: This is prime time. You can be more ambitious with your itinerary.
                                                                                                      • April-May (Spring):

                                                                                                        • Some roads might still be closed (especially to Taxkorgan)
                                                                                                        • Apricot blossoms in Kashgar area are incredible
                                                                                                        • My advice: Stick to south Xinjiang or lower-elevation areas in the north.
                                                                                                        • November-March (Winter):

Published on Xinjiang Travels – Real travel advice from someone who learned the hard way.

                                                                                                              • Fly from Urumqi to Kanas (1.5 hours) or take the overnight train + bus
                                                                                                              • Spend time hiking around the lake and exploring Hemu’s wooden houses
                                                                                                              • Days 7-12: Fly to Kashgar (yes, fly – don’t try to drive it)

                                                                                                                          • My advice: Slow down even more. The heat will drain you.
                                                                                                                          • September-October (My Favorite):

                                                                                                                            • Weather is perfect, crowds thin out
                                                                                                                            • Kanas in early October = fall colors that’ll ruin all other scenery for you
                                                                                                                            • Kashgar is more comfortable temperature-wise
                                                                                                                            • My advice: This is prime time. You can be more ambitious with your itinerary.
                                                                                                                            • April-May (Spring):

                                                                                                                              • Some roads might still be closed (especially to Taxkorgan)
                                                                                                                              • Apricot blossoms in Kashgar area are incredible
                                                                                                                              • My advice: Stick to south Xinjiang or lower-elevation areas in the north.
                                                                                                                              • November-March (Winter):

                                                                                                                                    • Yeah, I know I said Turpan earlier, but it’s worth 1-2 days if you’re starting from Urumqi anyway
                                                                                                                                    • The heat in summer is no joke (45°C+), but the ancient ruins are fascinating
                                                                                                                                    • Days 4-6: Kanas Lake + Hemu Village

                                                                                                                                      • Fly from Urumqi to Kanas (1.5 hours) or take the overnight train + bus
                                                                                                                                      • Spend time hiking around the lake and exploring Hemu’s wooden houses
                                                                                                                                      • Days 7-12: Fly to Kashgar (yes, fly – don’t try to drive it)

                                                                                                                                                        • But… you’ll have places like Kashgar almost to yourself
                                                                                                                                                        • My advice: Focus on Kashgar and Urumqi. Skip Kanas (it’s closed or miserably cold).

Kashgar alone could fill a week if you really get into the old city.

Option 2: The “I Have 10-12 Days” Sweet Spot

This is where things get interesting. With 10-12 days, you can actually combine north and south, but you need to be strategic.

The Classic North-South Route (12 days):

                                                                                                                                                              • Yeah, I know I said Turpan earlier, but it’s worth 1-2 days if you’re starting from Urumqi anyway
                                                                                                                                                              • The heat in summer is no joke (45°C+), but the ancient ruins are fascinating
                                                                                                                                                              • Days 4-6: Kanas Lake + Hemu Village

                                                                                                                                                                • Spend time hiking around the lake and exploring Hemu’s wooden houses
                                                                                                                                                                • Days 7-12: Fly to Kashgar (yes, fly – don’t try to drive it)

                                                                                                                                                                  • Days 7-9: Kashgar (Old City, Sunday Market, food)

                                                                                                                                                                  • Days 11-12: Kuqa or return to Urumqi
                                                                                                                                                                  • Why this works: You’re using flights to cover the massive distances, not spending your entire vacation in a car. Xinjiang has a decent internal flight network – use it.

                                                                                                                                                                            • My advice: Slow down even more. The heat will drain you.
                                                                                                                                                                            • September-October (My Favorite):

                                                                                                                                                                              • Weather is perfect, crowds thin out
                                                                                                                                                                              • Kanas in early October = fall colors that’ll ruin all other scenery for you
                                                                                                                                                                              • Kashgar is more comfortable temperature-wise
                                                                                                                                                                              • My advice: This is prime time. You can be more ambitious with your itinerary.
                                                                                                                                                                              • April-May (Spring):

                                                                                                                                                                                • Some roads might still be closed (especially to Taxkorgan)
                                                                                                                                                                                • Apricot blossoms in Kashgar area are incredible
                                                                                                                                                                                • My advice: Stick to south Xinjiang or lower-elevation areas in the north.
                                                                                                                                                                                • November-March (Winter):

                                                                                                                                                                                  • Many hotels and restaurants close, especially in tourist areas like Kanas
                                                                                                                                                                                  • But… you’ll have places like Kashgar almost to yourself

                                                                                                                                                                                      • This is tight but doable. You’ll spend about 3-4 hours driving most days, but the scenery makes it worth it. The key is staying two nights in Kanas/Hemu – it gives you time to actually hike and explore, not just snap photos from a viewpoint.

                                                                                                                                                                                        South Xinjiang Loop (7 days):

                                                                                                                                                                                        • Day 4: Taxkorgan + Karakoram Highway day trip

                                                                                                                                                                                        • South Xinjiang is more about culture than scenery (though the Karakoram Highway is epic). Kashgar alone could fill a week if you really get into the old city.

Option 2: The “I Have 10-12 Days” Sweet Spot

This is where things get interesting. With 10-12 days, you can actually combine north and south, but you need to be strategic.

The Classic North-South Route (12 days):

Days 1-3: Urumqi + Heavenly Lake + Turpan

                                                                                                                                                                                          • The heat in summer is no joke (45°C+), but the ancient ruins are fascinating
                                                                                                                                                                                          • Days 4-6: Kanas Lake + Hemu Village

                                                                                                                                                                                                  • Kuqa (2-3 days) – 运用大峡谷, Buddhist caves, way fewer tourists than Kashgar
                                                                                                                                                                                                  • Kashgar (3-4 days) – the crown jewel, take your time here

                                                                                                                                                                                                        • Kashgar is hot (35-40°C) but the night market is epic
                                                                                                                                                                                                        • My advice: Slow down even more. The heat will drain you.

Urumqi to Kashgar is 1,500 km – that’s like New York to Florida. Even “short” drives of 200-300 km can take 5-6 hours because the roads aren’t great and you’ll hit checkpoints.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                2. Build in buffer days.

I’ve seen people try to do Kashgar → Taxkorgan in one day and spend the entire time vomiting from altitude sickness. Not ideal.

But your time in Xinjiang is limited – is saving $50 worth spending 10 hours on a cramped bus?

                                                                                                                                                                                                                The Verdict

How Many Days for Xinjiang – Realistic Itineraries

The Hard Truth Nobody Tells You

When I first started planning my Xinjiang trip, every travel blog said the same thing: “You need at least 10-14 days for Xinjiang.” So I booked 12 days, thinking I’d see “most of it.”

                                                                                                                                                                                                                  I was delusional.

After spending five years exploring this region on and off, I can tell you straight up: Xinjiang is HUGE. It’s bigger than Iran. Bigger than Turkey. You could spend three weeks here and still feel like you barely scratched the surface.

But here’s the thing – you don’t need to see “everything” to have an incredible trip. What you need is realistic expectations and an itinerary that doesn’t leave you exhausted.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                  The Problem with “Standard” Itineraries

Most Xinjiang itineraries you find online are absolutely bonkers. They’ll have you driving 6-8 hours a day, “seeing” five cities in 10 days. That’s not a vacation – that’s a road rally.

I made this mistake my first time. I tried to squeeze Urumqi, Turpan, Kashgar, Kanas, and Heavenly Lake into 12 days. By day 8, I was so travel-weary that I actually considered skipping Kashgar (one of the best places in Xinjiang!) because I just couldn’t handle another long-distance bus ride.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Don’t do this to yourself.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Realistic Itinerary Options

Let me break down what actually works, based on how many days you have and what you want to see.

Option 1: The “I Only Have 5-7 Days” Route

My recommendation: Pick ONE region and explore it properly.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                  North Xinjiang Loop (7 days):

                                                                                                                                                                                                                  • Days 1-2: Urumqi + Heavenly Lake
                                                                                                                                                                                                                  • Days 3-4: Kanas Lake area (stay in Hemu Village)
                                                                                                                                                                                                                  • Days 5-6:五彩滩 + Burqin
                                                                                                                                                                                                                  • Day 7: Return to Urumqi
                                                                                                                                                                                                                  • This is tight but doable. You’ll spend about 3-4 hours driving most days, but the scenery makes it worth it. The key is staying two nights in Kanas/Hemu – it gives you time to actually hike and explore, not just snap photos from a viewpoint.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                    South Xinjiang Loop (7 days):

                                                                                                                                                                                                                    • Days 1-3: Kashgar (yes, three full days – it’s that good)
                                                                                                                                                                                                                    • Day 4: Taxkorgan + Karakoram Highway day trip
                                                                                                                                                                                                                    • Days 5-6: Kuqa +运用大峡谷
                                                                                                                                                                                                                    • Day 7: Return to Kashgar for flight out
                                                                                                                                                                                                                    • South Xinjiang is more about culture than scenery (though the Karakoram Highway is epic).

Option 3: The “I Have 2-3 Weeks” Dream Trip

Okay, now we’re talking. With 15-21 days, you can actually slow down and experience Xinjiang properly.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                            My ideal 3-week route:

                                                                                                                                                                                                                            • Urumqi (2 days) – use this to acclimate and see Heavenly Lake

                                                                                                                                                                                                                            • 伊犁 + 那拉提草原 (3 days) – this area is criminally underrated
                                                                                                                                                                                                                            • Week 2: The Silk Road Cities

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  • Eating at a hole-in-the-wall nan bread shop in Kashgar at 7 AM when the baker was just firing up the tandoor

Urumqi to Kashgar is 1,500 km – that’s like New York to Florida. Even “short” drives of 200-300 km can take 5-6 hours because the roads aren’t great and you’ll hit checkpoints.

I’ve seen people try to do Kashgar → Taxkorgan in one day and spend the entire time vomiting from altitude sickness. Not ideal.

But your time in Xinjiang is limited – is saving $50 worth spending 10 hours on a cramped bus?

Don’t try to do both.

You’ll spend your entire vacation in transit, and you’ll leave Xinjiang exhausted and disappointed.

And if someone tells you that you “must” see Kanas, Heavenly Lake, Turpan, Kashgar, and the Taklamakan Desert all in one trip? Smile politely and ignore them. They’re trying to sell you something, or they’ve never actually done it themselves.
