“21-Day Grand Xinjiang Expedition”

Three weeks lets you do Xinjiang properly — north and south, grasslands and deserts, Pamir and oases, with real downtime. This expedition strings our shorter routes into one grand loop. It’s ambitious but the region rewards the time.

The Arc

Fly into <<<-travel-guide-how-to-visit-2026/”><), cross to the south via train, do < + Pamir<), and fly out from Urumqi. Internal flights save days.

Three Weeks

Days 1–3 Urumqi + Heavenly Lake.

Days 4–8 Yili grasslands (Nalati, Kalajun, Qiaxi, Huocheng if June) + drive to Kanas.

Days 9–11 Kanas & Hemu.

Day 12 Fly/train south to Kashgar.

Days 13–15 Kashgar + Karakul/Pamir (Tashkurgan).

Days 16–17 Southern oases: Yarkand, Hotan (jade, carpets).

Days 18–19 Kuqa & Aksu (Grand Canyons, Kizil Caves).

Days 20 Turpan (Jiaohe, Flaming Mtn, Grape Valley).

Day 21 Turpan–Urumqi, depart.

Pacing

This is full but not breathless — 2–3 nights per hub. Cut Kanas if you prefer more south, or vice versa. Two internal flights (Kanas↔Kashgar, Turpan↔Urumqi) keep it sane.

Transport

Mix trains (Urumqi–Kashgar sleeper), flights (Kashgar–Urumqi), and private car/tours for loops. Self-drive only if confident on long desert roads.

Seasonal Note

Late Sep–early Oct is the dream — Kanas gold, clear Pamir, mild south. Book everything months ahead; it’s peak.

FAQ

Budget? ~¥8,000–15,000/person all-in depending on flights and comfort.

Guide needed? Not fully, but a car/driver for loops saves stress.
