Korla (库尔勒) is the Tarim Basin’s modern hub, and just northeast lies Bosten Lake (博斯腾湖) — China’s largest inland freshwater lake, a blue expanse ringed by reed beds and home to migrating birds. It’s an easy, pretty break on the southern or eastern loop.
Bosten Lake
A surprisingly large, calm lake fed by the Kaidu River. The Lianhua (Lotus) Lake section has boardwalks and reed boats; the open water has beaches and a resort strip. In spring and autumn, cranes, swans, and flamingos stop here — a birder’s treat.
Korla Town
Clean, green, and prosperous (it’s a gas hub). The Peacock River runs through it; the Korla Museum covers local history. Good hotels and the best base for Bosten and the nearby Tiemenguan pass.
