The Short Answer
Best overall: Mid-September to early October. The weather is perfect, the crowds have left, and the autumn colors in the grasslands and birch forests are spectacular.
Best for budget travelers: April-May and November-March (excluding peak holiday weeks).
Best for photographers: September-October (colors) and January-February (snow).
Best for hiking: June-September (the high passes are open).
Best for cultural experiences: July-August (festivals) and September-October (harvest season).
Now here’s the month-by-month breakdown.

Month-by-Month
March
Weather: -5°C to 10°C. Still winter in most of Xinjiang.
Why go: Almost no tourists. Hotels are 40-60% cheaper. The apricot blossoms in Turpan start in late March.
What’s closed: High mountain passes (Muztagh Ata area, some grassland areas).
April
Weather: 5°C to 20°C. Spring arrives in the south (Kashgar, Turpan).
Why go: Apricot blossom season in Kashgar region. The old city is magical with flowers in the courtyards.
Crowds: Still very few. This is the “secret season” that locals know about.
May
Weather: 10°C to 25°C. Pleasant across most of the region.
Why go: Everything is open, but the summer crowds haven’t arrived yet. Great for the Ili Valley grasslands (they’re green but not yet dried out).
Watch out for: Sandstorms in the Turpan/Kashgar area. They can last 2-3 days.
June
Weather: 15°C to 35°C. Summer starts.
Why go: The grasslands are at their greenest. Wildflowers everywhere. Long daylight (sunset at 10:30 PM).
Crowds: Starting to pick up. Book accommodation ahead.
July
Weather: 20°C to 40°C. Peak summer.
Why go: Everything is open. Festivals. Night markets every night. The energy is high.
Crowds: Peak season. Expect tour groups everywhere.
August
Weather: 18°C to 38°C. Similar to July.
Why go: Grape harvest in Turpan. The night markets are in full swing.
Crowds: Still peak. Book everything 2-3 weeks ahead.
September
Weather: 10°C to 25°C. The best month.
Why go: Autumn colors start in the north (Kanas, Hemu). The heat backs off. Crowds leave after September 10.
This is the month: If you can only pick one, make it September.
October
Weather: 0°C to 20°C. Autumn in full swing.
Why go: Kanas and the birch forests are at peak color (first 2 weeks). The light is incredible for photography.
Watch out for: Chinese National Day holiday (October 1-7). Avoid this week or book everything 2 months ahead.
November
Weather: -5°C to 10°C. Winter arrives.
Why go: The crowds are gone. Hotels drop to 30-50% of summer prices. The first snows are beautiful.
What’s closed: Some grassland areas, high mountain passes.
December-February
Weather: -20°C to 0°C. Proper winter.
Why go: The snow landscapes are incredible. Skiing near Urumqi (Nanshan, Jiangjunshan). The Ice and Snow Festival.
What’s closed: Kanas Lake area (accessible but very few facilities). Some guesthouses close for the season.

The Verdict
If you asked me to pick just one time? September 10 – October 5. The weather, the colors, the light, the (relative) lack of crowds — it’s the sweet spot.
But honestly? Xinjiang in any season is better than not going at all. Just pack for the conditions and adjust your expectations.
