The color changes. The water shifts from deep blue to turquoise to emerald green depending on the season, time of day, and weather. Locals will tell you the lake has 12 different colors.

The best time to visit Kanas Lake depends entirely on what you want to see:

My recommendation: If you can only go once, aim for September 15 – October 5. The autumn colors are at their peak, the weather is stable, and the light is perfect for photography. Yes, it’s crowded – but for good reason.

If you hate crowds and don’t mind missing the autumn colors, June is a great alternative. The meadows are covered in wildflowers, the weather is comfortably cool, and hotel prices are lower.

How to Get to Kanas Lake

Option 1: Fly + Bus (Recommended)

Step 1: Fly to Kanas Airport (KNS). This small airport operates seasonal flights from mid-June to early October. Direct flights are available from:

Ürümqi (1.5 hours, daily in peak season)
Chengdu (charter flights in autumn)
Xi’an (charter flights in autumn)

Step 2: From Kanas Airport, take a shuttle bus to the scenic area (1 hour, ¥60). Buses run regularly when flights arrive.

Note: Kanas Airport is at Jiadengyu (贾登峪), which is the entrance area. You still need to take the scenic area shuttle bus to reach the lake itself.

Option 2: Bus from Ürümqi (Budget Option)

Take a long-distance bus from Ürümqi Nanchang Bus Station to Burqin (布尔津), then transfer to another bus to Jiadengyu.
Total travel time: 12-14 hours.
Cost: About ¥200-250.
Only recommended if you have a very tight budget and plenty of time.

Option 3: Private Car / Road Trip

Many travelers drive from Ürümqi (about 10-12 hours). The road has improved significantly in recent years, but it’s still a long drive. A private car with driver costs around ¥2,500-3,500 per day for the round trip from Ürümqi.

Top Things to Do at Kanas Lake

1. Visit the Kanas Lake Viewing Platform (观鱼台)

This is the most famous viewpoint. You’ll climb 1,066 steps to a platform at 2,050 meters – 660 meters above the lake surface. On a clear day, you can see the entire lake and the surrounding mountain peaks.

How to get there: Take the shuttle bus from the village to the trailhead (¥20 round trip), then hike up (about 45-60 minutes).
Best time: Early morning (8:00-10:00 AM) for the best light and fewer people.
Tip: If you have knee problems, the descent is steep – use trekking poles or take it slow.

2. Walk the Lakeside Boardwalk

A well-maintained wooden boardwalk runs along part of the lake shore. It’s an easy, flat walk (about 2-3 hours round trip from the village) with gorgeous views.

Best section: The stretch from the ferry pier to the northwest bay.
Photography tip: Late afternoon (5:00-7:00 PM) gives warm side lighting on the water.

3. Take a Boat Ride on the Lake

Electric boats operate on the lake from June to September. A 1-hour cruise costs ¥120 per person.

Is it worth it? If you’ve never been on an alpine lake, yes. If you’re on a tight budget, skip it – the views from the shore and the viewing platform are better.

4. Explore Kanas Village (喀纳斯村)

The lake is part of a larger scenic area that includes three villages: Kanas Village, Hemu Village, and Baihaba Village. Kanas Village has wooden cabins, small restaurants, and souvenir shops. It’s touristy but charming.

Where to eat: Try the local Mongolian hot pot or freshly caught river fish (though note that fishing is restricted, so “fresh fish” may be from elsewhere).

6. Visit Baihaba Village (白哈巴村)

This village sits right on the China-Kazakhstan border. It requires a border pass (¥50, arranged at the scenic area office with your passport).

Worth it? Only if you have extra time. It’s similar to Hemu but more remote and less developed.

Burqin (布尔津): 2 hours from the scenic area. More hotel options, ¥200-600/night. Good for breaking up the journey.

Kanas Lake’s weather is unpredictable. Even in summer, temperatures can drop significantly at night.

Day 3: Morning shuttle to Hemu Village → explore the village → horseback riding (optional) → return to Kanas or depart.

If you have more time, add a day in Baihaba or spend two nights in Hemu.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Not booking accommodation early enough. Autumn slots sell out 1-2 months in advance. If you’re traveling in September/October, book as soon as your dates are confirmed.

Trying to do it as a day trip. The journey from Ürümqi is too long for a day trip. You need at least 2 days, ideally 3.

Ignoring altitude. Kanas is at 1,374m – not high enough for serious altitude sickness, but some people feel mild symptoms. Take it easy on your first day.

Assuming it’s warm because it’s summer. Bring a jacket. Always.
