Connectivity in Xinjiang is better than its reputation but comes with quirks. Plan it wrong and you’ll be offline in the exact valley you wanted to post from. Plan it right and you’ll have 4G/5G almost everywhere except deep desert and high passes.
Buying a SIM
<<) or China Mobile/Telecom/Unicom stores with your passport. Bring it — no passport, no SIM. Expect ¥50–100 for a starter with a few GB. China Mobile has the widest coverage in rural Xinjiang; Telecom is strong in cities.Tip: airport kiosks are fastest but sometimes out of stock. A city flagship store is reliable. Avoid street vendors.
The Great Firewall Reality
Google, WhatsApp, Gmail, Instagram, Facebook, and most Western apps don’t work without a VPN. If you need them, set up a VPN before you arrive in China — they’re hard to download once inside. Note that VPN use in China is a legal gray area; many travelers use them, but don’t discuss it loudly.
Maps: Google Maps is blocked. Use Amap (Gaode) or Baidu Maps — both have English modes and work well for navigation and ride-hailing.
Wi-Fi
Hotels and cafes offer Wi-Fi but it routes through the same filtered network. Don’t count on it for video calls to the West without a VPN. Guesthouses in remote areas may have weak or no Wi-Fi — download maps and shows beforehand.

If you need to work, treat Urumqi and big hotels as your reliable nodes. Small-town guesthouses may throttle. A backup portable Wi-Fi (rentable in Urumqi) helps but also hits the firewall.
