Spend at least 3 days in Yili if you can. One day at Nalati, one at Kalajun, and one drifting between Tekes and the smaller pastures. It’s the closest thing Xinjiang offers to the “lost pastoral” fantasy, and it’s still relatively unfenced by mass tourism.

When is Yili grassland best? Late May to early June for flowers; July–August for deep green and festivals. September turns golden.

Do I need a permit? No special permit for Nalati/Kalajun. Border areas near Kazakhstan need passport checks but not advance permits.

Can I camp? Wild camping is technically restricted in core scenic zones, but yurt stays are easy to arrange and far more comfortable.

Why Yili Hits Different

The Ili River Valley sits in a rain shadow paradox: surrounded by snow mountains, yet fed by meltwater and sporadic rain that turns the steppe emerald from May to September. The result is rolling grassland stacked with wildflowers, threaded by rivers, and dotted with Kazakh yurts. It feels less like China and more like a Mongolia-Kyrgyzstan hybrid.

Unlike the arid Tarim Basin to the south, Yili is humid, fragrant, and alive with birdsong. Drive any rural road in June and you’ll hit seas of purple verbena, yellow rape, and white apricot blossom.

Nalati – The Most Famous Pasture

Nalati Grassland (那拉提) is the headline act, and for good reason. Its “Sky Prairie” (空中草原) section sits at 2,200m with a viewing platform that looks straight down a valley of looping river bends. Go early (before 10am) to beat tour buses and catch ground mist burning off the grass.

Practical notes:

• Entry: ~¥95 plus shuttle (~¥40). Cable car to Snow Lotus Valley adds ~¥100.
• Stay: Yurts inside the park run ¥300–600/night; better value in nearby Nalati town.
• Best light: sunrise from the east ridge, golden hour on the river bends around 8pm in summer.

Kalajun – The Wild Alternative

Kalajun (喀拉峻) is Nalati’s quieter, craggier sibling. Its “Human Grassland” lives up to the name — undulating ridges with a 3D feel that photographers love. The eastern section connects to Koksu Canyon; the western “Five Flower Meadow” explodes with color in late May.

Kalajun links to Kuokesu and the Qiaxi spruce forest. A 2-day hike between Kalajun and Koksu is one of the best overnight treks in northern Xinjiang, with horse support available.

Beyond the Headliners

• Narat / Qiaxi: spruce forests and meadows, far fewer crowds.
• Tekes: theBagua (eight-trigram) city laid out as a giant mandala — worth a night for the oddity alone.
• Huocheng: July lavender fields (see our lavender guide) blanket the valley floor.
• Guozigou Bridge: a sci-fi suspension bridge cutting through a canyon of walnuts and pine.

Getting There

Fly to Yining (Ili) Airport<
(~1h, multiple daily flights). From Yining, Nalati is ~250km (3.5h drive), Kalajun ~120km. Rent a car or join a loop tour — public buses exist but are slow.
