Only five days? Xinjiang is huge, but you can still taste its range if you pick one region and go deep instead of sprinting across the map. This plan focuses on the north<<<-travel-guide-how-to-visit-2026/”>), the most efficient highlights loop for a short visit.
Why North, Not South?
<, Pamir) needs a flight and more days. Save it for trip two.Day-by-Day
Day 1 – Urumqi arrival
Land, ease in. Visit the Xinjiang Regional Museum< and mummy exhibits) and the International Grand Bazaar for dinner. Overnight Urumqi.
Day 2 – Heavenly Lake (Tianshan Tianchi)
90 min from the city. Boat or cable car to the lake at 1,900m, walk the shore, maybe a short ridge hike. Back to Urumqi evening. (See our Heavenly Lake guide for trails.)
2h high-speed train south. See Jiaohe Ruins (earth city), Grape Valley, and Flaming Mountains at sunset. Stay overnight in Turpan — it’s hot but atmospheric.
Day 4 – Turpan deeper
Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves, Emin Minaret, and the Karez underground irrigation system. Afternoon train back to Urumqi.
Day 5 – Departure or buffer
If flying out, use the morning for the Hongshan Park city view. If you have energy, a half-day trip to Dabancheng wind farms.
Pacing Notes
This is relaxed by Xinjiang standards. You’ll spend ~4h/day in transit, leaving real time at sites. Skip the bazaar dinner if you want an early Turpan start.
If You Fly Into Kashgar Instead
Reverse it: 2 days Kashgar (old city + Sunday bazaar), 1 day Karakul Lake day-trip to the Pamir, 1 day Oytagh Glacier Park, fly out. That’s the south’s 5-day version.
Shoulder Seasons
Spring (Apr–May) and autumn (Sep–Oct) are ideal — Turpan is brutal in July/August. Heavenly Lake is best June–September; winter is stunning but cold.
