Aksu<, but its headline is just north: the Wensu Grand Canyon (温宿大峡谷)<‘s yards, it’s bigger and wilder — a red-planet landscape you can drive and walk into.
The Canyon
A 5km scenic road leads into towering sandstone formations — some 200m high, in stripes of red, white, and brown. Wooden walkways and a loop trail let you explore on foot. At sunset the whole place glows. Entry ~¥40 plus a shuttle.
Unlike Bezeklik’s cliff caves, Wensu is pure erosion art — wind and rain sculpted these walls over millions of years. It feels empty; you may have a ridge to yourself.
Aksu Town

Getting There
< rail line (~12h from Urumqi, ~5h from Kashgar by fast train). The canyon is ~70km north, best by car/tour from town (1.5h).Combine With
- Toksu / Kuqa to the east (Grand Canyon + Kucha ruins).
- The Tarim Desert Highway south to Hotan.
- Korla to the northeast (Bosten Lake).
Best Time
Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct — mild and colorful. Summer is furnace-hot; the canyon bakes.
FAQ
Better than Turpan’s canyons? Bigger and redder; Turpan’s are earth-yellow and historical. Both worth it.
Crowds? Light — far fewer tourists than the north.
Drive or tour? Tour/shuttle easiest; the access road is remote.
