Bayinbuluke (巴音布鲁克) is the high alpine meadow of Xinjiang — a vast, boggy green basin at 2,500m ringed by snow peaks, famous for its winding river and a protected swan lake. It’s remote, cold, and one of the most beautiful open landscapes in the region.
The Famous Bend
The postcard shot is the “Nine Turns” (九曲十八弯) of the Kaidu River — a single thread of water looping across the flat meadow, especially at sunset when it can reflect nine suns (a local legend, real on still evenings). The viewing platform gets crowded at golden hour; arrive an hour early for a spot.
Swan Lake
China’s only nature reserve for wild swans (mainly whooper swans) sits here. From April to October, thousands nest in the marshes. You watch from boardwalks — no entering the wetland. Bring binoculars; the birds are distant but the setting is spectacular.
Getting There
Bayinbuluke sits between Yili and Korla. It’s ~3h from Yining or Korla by road, often as a stop on the northern loop. The access road climbs the Duku Highway (独库公路) — a seasonal mountain road (open ~June–September) with jaw-dropping switchbacks. Note: the Duku is one-way at times and closes in bad weather.
Weather & Altitude
It’s cold year-round — even July nights drop to 5°C. At 2,500m exertion gets you winded. Pack a warm layer no matter the season. Afternoon rain is common; mornings are clearest.
Staying
The town at the gate has hotels and yurts. Yurt stays inside give you sunrise access before the crowds. Book ahead in July–August.
Why It’s Special
Unlike Nalati’s manicured pasture, Bayinbuluke feels wild and enormous — you sense the scale of the Tian Shan here. The combination of swans, snow mountains, and a river that won’t sit straight is unique in China.
