“Northern Xinjiang Loop – Lakes, Grasslands & Forests”

  • Car: a self-drive or private driver makes the loop smooth; buses are slow.
  • Season: June–Sept for green; late Sept–early Oct for Kanas’ gold (book early — it’s peak).
  • Altitude: moderate (1,500–2,500m); easy on the body.

Add-Ons

  • Altay skiing (winter) instead of Kanas.
  • Koktokay geological park between Altay and Urumqi.
  • Duku Highway if open (June–Sep) for a mountainous shortcut.

FAQ

Better than the south? Different — north is nature, south is culture. Do both over time.

Minimum days? 7 for a rushed loop; 10 is comfortable.

Car or tour? Tour is easiest for the long drives; confident drivers can self-drive.

The north is Xinjiang’s green half — alpine lakes, endless grassland, and taiga-like forests. A 7–10 day loop< covers the best of it without the desert drives of the south. This is the route most first-timers fall hardest for.

The Loop Shape

<<-travel-guide-how-to-visit-2026/”></Hemu → back via Burqin or Altay → Urumqi. A rough ring of ~1,800km, best by car or tour.

Day-by-Day (9 days)

Day 1 – Urumqi, prep, museum.

Day 2 – Heavenly Lake, drive toward Yili (or fly).

Day 3 – Nalati grassland.

Day 4 – Kalajun + Tekes (Bagua city).

Day 5 – Drive north to Kanas (long, scenic) or fly to Altay then transfer.

Day 6< (the “God’s Lake”).

Day 7 – Hemu Village sunrise, forest walks.

Day 8 – Burqin / Colorful Beach, return toward Urumqi.

Day 9 – Urumqi, depart.

Why the North Wins Hearts

Kanas’ mirrored lake, Hemu’s wooden cabins in morning mist, and Yili’s flower carpets are postcard-real. The north also has the best eco-stays — wooden lodges, not just city hotels.
