The Honest Answer
It depends on what you want to see. But if you’re asking me for a minimum — 7 days. Anything less and you’ll spend half your trip in transit and the other half exhausted.
That said, here are realistic itineraries based on actual trips I’ve done (not theoretical ones from travel agents).
5 Days (The “I Only Have a Long Weekend” Option)
Reality check: You can’t “do Xinjiang” in 5 days. But you can get a taste.
Day 1:<. Museum, Grand Bazaar, sleeep off the jet lag.
Day 3-4: Kashgar. Old City, Sunday Bazaar (if it’s Sunday), teahouse, night market.
Day 5: Fly out from Kashgar.
Verdict: Rush rush rush. You’ll see two very different sides of Xinjiang (modern Urumqi and traditional Kashgar), but you’ll be tired.
7 Days (The Classic First-Timer Route)
This is the most common itinerary. It works.
Day 1: Arrive Urumqi.
Day 2:<<-travel-guide-how-to-visit-2026/”><.
Day 3: Turpan — Jiaohe Ruins, Flaming Mountains, Grape Valley. Evening: overnight bus or early train back to Urumqi.
Day 4: Fly/train to Kashgar. Afternoon exploring the Old City.
Day 5: Kashgar full day. Sunday Bazaar if it’s Sunday.
Day 6: Day trip to Karakul Lake (the Pamirs). Long day (12 hours round trip), but spectacular.
Day 7: Fly out from Kashgar.
Verdict: Better than 5 days, but you’re still moving every 1-2 days. Good intro to the region.
10 Days (The Sweet Spot)
With 10 days, you can actually breathe.
Days 1-2: Urumqi + Heavenly Lake.
Days 3-4: Turpan.
Days 5-7: Kashgar (with a day trip to the Pamirs).
Days 8-10:< + Ili Valley grasslands. Fly out from Yining (or back to Urumqi).
Verdict: This is the itinerary I recommend to first-timers. You hit the three main regions (north, east, south) and get a feel for the diversity of Xinjiang.
14 Days (The “I Want to See the Good Stuff” Option)
Now we’re talking. With 14 days, you can add the places that most tourists miss.
Days 1-3: Urumqi + Heavenly Lake + Turpan.
Days 4-6: Kashgar + Pamirs.
Days 7-9: Fly to Yining. Sayram Lake (stay overnight in a ger), Ili grasslands (Nalati or Kalajun).
Days 10-12:<<-lake-travel-guide-xinjiangs-gods-lake-2026/”> + Hemu Village. This requires flying to Kanas (KJI) or a long drive from Yining.
Days 13-14: Drive the desert highway (Taklamakan crossing) or head back to Urumqi. Fly out.
Verdict: This is a full, rich trip. You’ll need a few days to recover afterward, but you’ll have seen the best of what Xinjiang has to offer.
The “Don’t Do This” Warning
Don’t try to see both Kanas AND Kashgar in 7 days. The travel time between them is 10-12 hours (or a 1.5-hour flight with potential delays). Pick one region and explore it properly.
Don’t plan 12-hour driving days back-to-back. Xinjiang roads are good, but the distances are real. Build in rest days.
The Verdict
If you can swing 10-14 days, do it. Xinjiang rewards slow travel. The best moments happen when you’re not rushing — when you have time to get lost in the Old City, or sit by Sayram Lake for 3 hours doing absolutely nothing.
5 days? Better than nothing. 7 days? Good intro. 10+ days? That’s where the magic happens.
